SILVER COULD BE THE ANSWER TO THE COMMON COLD

Promising new research on the use of silver has emerged which may provide a potential cure for the common cold. 

 

The discovery was made by a team at the University of Ghent in Belgium. Professor Willy Verstraete, a microbiologist, discovered a method of attaching nanoparticles of silver to harmless bacteria called Lactobacillus fermentum. This bacteria, often found in probiotic yoghurts, when grown in a solution of silver ions, then excretes tiny particles of silver which stud the outside of the cells. 

 

Researchers tested the silver-impregnated bacteria against norovirus, which causes winter vomiting outbreaks, and found they leave the virus unable to cause infections. The researchers believe the same technique could help to combat other viruses, including influenza and those responsible for causing the common cold.

 

Scientists said the silver-studded bacteria could be incorporated into nasal sprays, water filters or hand washes to prevent the spread of viruses. 

 

How is the Common Cold Spread?

 

The common cold is a viral upper respiratory tract infection where the virus multiplies many times in the nose producing nasal secretion, coughing and sneezing. The cold virus is spread by hand-to-hand contact, airborne fluid, and contact with surfaces or objects. Blowing the nose, coughing or sneezing, and then touching a person can transmit the virus. If a person sneezes or coughs, the secretions land on objects such as bench tops, computer keyboards, toys or other surfaces. The virus will live up to 3 hours on these surfaces, all a person has to do is touch the contaminated surface and they become infected. 

 

The best way to avoid colds is to wash your hands thoroughly, avoid touching your nose and avoid contaminated surfaces. This is sometimes easier said than done. Colloidal silver gel comes in handy, as silver is considered a broad-spectrum antimicrobial, anti-viral and anti-fungal agent. By applying a small amount of silver gel to your hands every 4 hours you are helping create a "shield" or barrier to viruses such as those that cause the common cold. Even if you touch a surface contaminated with the cold virus, you will have decreased your risk of transmitting the virus to yourself or others by improving your barrier resistance.
