Here is an article that was shared on one of the nsp yahoogroups. I think many of us can identify with this.
Geelong Advertiser

By Margaret Linley

I'M fed up with the government wanting to put fluoride in our water.

I've done nothing about it - haven't been to a rally, written a letter, tramped over town with a slogan on my t-shirt. Nothing. There's probably a heap of people like me who don't want it but haven't actually done anything to show anyone how they feel.

You can throw all the statistics at me you like, you pro-fluoride people, but I'm not going to read them. Likewise with the anti-fluoride. I don't need scientific evidence to back up my position.

As far as I'm concerned the issue is about sticking anything in the water.

Okay, I can hear you whining at me you pro-fluorides. I can hear you saying 'she's a moron; doesn't she know her water supply is already chockers with chlorine and the like?'

Yeah, yeah, I know that. Don't try and trick me with your cleverness. Those chemicals are there because they make the water pure enough to drink. I don't have a complaint about that.

It's the medicating aspect of it that gets my goat.

There's a debate about whether or not fluoride is actually a poison or not. I seem to recall something about it being a by-product of fertilisers, but I could be wrong.

That's my point, though; I don't need to know that stuff. That's not what bothers me. It's that government is going to put me on a medical regiment whether I like it or not.

Once the fluoride is in the water the government is medicating me against my will. And, of course, the medicine will be in just about everything - not just in the glasses of water I chug down.

I don't need medicating. My teeth are fine. In fact I have lovely teeth with only one filling. But again that's not the point.

If my teeth were falling out of my head and collapsing around even the softest food I still don't want the government to put fluoride in the water. Let me decide what I am going to do about my teeth.

There's talk about the dental health of the country declining. That's not a surprise. The dental vans that used to call at schools and see every kid's teeth are a thing of the past. The free milk we used to have at recess when we were kids has long since gone.

If the government was really serious about doing anything for our kids' teeth, bring back the free dental check-ups for primary kids, bring back the free milk.

If it's dead keen on making sure kids ingest fluoride, give fluoride tablets to the schools to hand out to the kids each morning. The parents could then sign the form saying 'yes, we'll have that' or 'no, buzz off'.

It's about choice. It's about medicating against our will. It's about solving a specific problem (failing dental health in kids) with an enormous non-specific super-invasive solution.

Don't sprout statistics at me any of of you. Don't send me glossy brochures printed with money that could be spent on a term's worth of free milk for every kid in Geelong.

Don't even talk to me unless you want to answer my question - what gives anyone the right to medicate me against my will?

Phenylpropanolamine (PPA)

Update - On December 22, 2005 the FDA issued a notice of proposed rulemaking (notice) for over-the-counter (OTC) nasal decongestant and weight control products containing phenylpropanoloamine preparations. This proposed rule reclassifies phenylpropanolamine as nonmonograph (Category II) not generally recognized as safe and effective. Written and electronic comments and new data can be submitted by March, 22, 2006.
  • Phenylpropanolamine-containing products (OTC); tentative final monographs [PDF] [HTML]

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is taking steps to remove phenylpropanolamine (PPA) from all drug products and has requested that all drug companies discontinue marketing products containing PPA. In addition, FDA has issued a public health advisory concerning phenylpropanolamine. This drug is an ingredient that was used in many over-the-counter (OTC) and prescription cough and cold medications as a decongestant and in OTC weight loss products.

In response to the request made by FDA in November 2000, many companies have voluntarily reformulated and are continuing to reformulate their products to exclude PPA while FDA proceeds with the regulatory process necessary to remove PPA from the market.

We have received numerous requests for a list of products containing PPA. Since companies continue to reformulate their products, FDA is not maintaining a comprehensive, updated list of products that still contain PPA. FDA is aware of emails circulating widely that list many products allegedly containing PPA. These emails, however, generally contain dated and inaccurate information and should be ignored.

The FDA recommends that consumers read the labels of OTC drug products to determine if the product contains PPA. The Agency believes this to be the most accurate method for determining the PPA content of OTC products rather than providing an incomplete or out-of-date list of products that may have already been reformulated and no longer contain PPA. (Introduction updated 03/07/2003)

Scientists at Yale University School of Medicine recently issued a report entitled "Phenylpropanolamine & Risk of Hemorrhagic Stroke: Final Report of the Hemorrhagic Stroke Project." This study reports that taking PPA increases the risk of hemorrhagic stroke (bleeding into the brain or into tissue surrounding the brain) in women. Men may also be at risk. Although the risk of hemorrhagic stroke is very low, FDA recommends that consumers not use any products that contain PPA.

FDA's Nonprescription Drugs Advisory Committee recently discussed this Yale study along with additional information on phenylpropanolamine. The Advisory Committee determined that there is an association between PPA and hemorrhagic stroke. It recommended that PPA be considered not safe for over-the-counter use.

For more information on this public health advisory, please see the items below.

I urge you to review the list of medicines with PPA and avoid these medications. All drugs containing PHENYLPROPANOLAMINE are dangerous. You may want to try calling the 800 number listed on most drug boxes and inquire about a REFUND. Please read this CAREFULLY. Also, please pass this on to everyone you know. STOP TAKING anything containing this ingredient.

It has been linked to increased hemorrhagic stroke (bleeding in brain) among women ages 18-49 in the three days after starting use of the medication. Problems were not found in men, but the FDA recommended that everyone (even children) seek alternative medicine'

The following medications contain Phenylpropanolamine :-

1. Acutrim Diet Gum Appetite Suppressant
2. Acutrim Plus Dietary Supplements
3 Acutrim Maximum Strength Appetite Control

1 Orange 3D Cold & Allergy Cherry (Pink)
2. 3 D Cold & Cough Berry
3. 3D Cough Relief Yellow 3D Expectorant

They are asking you to call them at 800-548-3708 with the lot number on the box so they can send you postage for you to send it back to them, and they will also issue you a refund. If you know of anyone else with small children, PLEASE PASS THIS ON.

This article was forwarded to me by my friend George. Thanks for sharing George. I am always horrified that people take all these over the counter chemicals. Here is just one more great reason for preventive health care and learning how to use herbs and the other foods that God made for us to nurture and heal our bodies and minds.

Saving money isn't all about whether or not you know how to score screaming bargains.
It has more to do with your attitude toward money.
Just think of those who don't fit the filthy-rich stereotype. People like Warren Buffett.
As explained in the book The Millionaire Next Door by Thomas J. Stanley and William D. Danko, personal finance has as much to do with people's traits as it does with money. Many millionaires, in fact, have frugal ways.
Understanding how personal traits can influence your finances is an essential ingredient for building wealth.
Here are 10 key traits:
1. Patience
Patience is one of the most important traits when it comes to saving money.
This means waiting until the first wave of product hype has passed, keeping a car for an extra few years before getting another one and waiting until something you want fits into your budget instead of putting it on credit.
Patience is often the difference between creating savings and being in debt. Having the patience to wait until you find a good deal is a cornerstone of good finances.
2. Satisfaction
When you're satisfied, there is no reason to spend money on nonessentials. The sole purpose of commercials is to make you believe that buying a product or service will make you happier, wealthier, better looking or improve whatever isn't bringing you satisfaction.
People spend because they want to capture the excitement shown in advertisements. When you are satisfied with what you have and your life (not trying to live like those on TV), your finances will be in a lot better shape.
3. Organization
Being organized can make you more productive and ensure that all the many issues pertaining to personal finances are addressed.
It means not paying late fees, not buying two of everything, knowing deadlines that can affect your finances and getting more done in less time. All these can greatly benefit your finances.
4. Discipline
You need the discipline to continue to save money for specific, long-term goals every month.
Personal finance isn't a way to get rich quick, but is a disciplined execution of your lifetime plans.
5. Reflectiveness
It's important to be able to look at your financial decisions and reflect on their results.
You're going to make financial mistakes. Everyone does.
The key is to learn from those mistakes so you don't make them again, or recognize if you keep repeating them.
6. Creativity
The economy and our earnings don't always match our expectations.
Unexpected developments wreak havoc to elaborate financial plans. When this happens, changes are needed to deal with the new circumstances. Creativity is essential to accomplish this.
Creativity allows you to make something last longer rather than purchasing it when you don't have the money. It means juggling money to stay out of debt rather than simply paying with a credit card. It means finding a cheaper alternative when money is tight.
In these ways, creativity plays a large role in keeping finances in order.
7. Curiosity
Having curiosity helps you learn, study and improve yourself.
The curiosity of wanting to know more, to take the time to study and then take what is learned and put into practice is an important process that is driven by curiosity.
8. Risk-Taking
To build wealth, one needs to be willing to take risks. This doesn't mean uncalculated risks. It means weighing all the options and taking calculated risks when appropriate.
The stock market has risks involved, but over the long term, history shows that it provides good returns on money that is invested wisely. Those who fear risk altogether end up saving money in accounts that likely lose money to inflation in the long run.
9. Goal-Oriented
The importance of setting and working toward goals is obvious. If you don't know where you are going, it's difficult to get there. It helps your personal finances immensely if you have money goals and are motivated to reach the goals that you have set for yourself.
Those who lack goals don't have a road map to take them to the financial destination they want.
10. Hard- and Smart-Working:
Creating wealth and staying out of debt rarely comes about without a lot of hard work.
Many people might hope that the lottery will solve all their financial problems. The true path to financial freedom, however, is to work hard to earn money while educating yourself to continue to have more value and increase your salary.
You may not possess all of the above traits. But knowing them can help you make changes so that you nourish the ones that you have and obtain the ones you're missing.
Ultimately they will help you with your personal finances and create a plan to accumulate the wealth you desire.
