Karen's Homemade Salad Dressing

So often we eat a salad full of nutrition and then cover it with a non nutritious fatty dressing.... sort of defeats the purpose doesn't it? Here is an alternative which is much better for you and very popular to all who try it.

1/2 c Olive Oil
1/8 c Balsamic Vinegar
1/8 c Apple Cider Vinegar
1/4 c. red wine

Pure Maple Syrup, start with 1 tsp.
Dijon Mustard, start with 1 tsp.
1/2 tsp. Worchestershire sauce
1 tsp. garlic, minced,
pepper
Soy Sauce or even healthier try Bragg's all natural liquid aminos, start with 1 tsp.
1/4 tsp. Ginger
1/4 tsp. Horseradish, prepared

Mix well, then amend recipe to taste by adding alittle more of this and that. This takes a few days in the fridge to meld and marry, so it is best to make it in advance.

Dieting Tips

Learn the Secrets of Long Time Losers

Never Skip Breakfast
Focus on getting more of your food earlier in the day and you'll burn more calories instead of storing them as fat. You should have at least 4 hours between your last meal and bed time.

Move
Regular exercise is important, but don't miss out on the everday actions, such as becoming an "inefficiency" expert, so you make more than one trip to put the laundry away. Park further from the stores. Choose the stairs instead of the elevator. Walk 11-12,000 steps a day.

Breathe Deeply
Move lymph through out your body more quickly by taking some time each day to concentrate on your breathing. The lymphatic system moves toxins out of your blood stream as well as return cleansed lymph back to the blood. The clean lymph filters back into your blood at the height of the deepest part of each breath. Exercise & body movement also moves lymph.

Read Labels...REPEAT Read Labels
Check the serving size and number in the package and compare the weight of a "low carb" serving with a regular version. Many times the portion has been reduced, the servings per container INCREASED and the fat has been increased to create a lower carb count. Stay away from hydrogenated oils, transfats, corn syrup, "fake" sugars and ingredients you can not pronounce.

Write it Down
Keep track of how often you exercise, and all foods you have eaten. How many servings of fruit or dairy can make you concious of your eating habits and point out a weight-gain trend before you've packed on 10 pounds. Also note bowel movements & how you feel each day so you can keep track how your present dietary routine is aiding or failing you.
Reviewing daily will help you to stay on track.

Plan for Disastors
Stressful times will tempt you to go back to your old habits, so have a strategy in place (yoga, call friends but anything other than food) and write it down. Find good for you snacks to satisfy during these times such as nuts, raisins and fresh fruits. If you DO fall off the wagon do not get discouraged - Jump right back on and look forward not back.

Stay away from non-nutrient foods
General rule: Anything put on this earth from God eat - anything else don't. Look for foods grown on fertile soil and animal sources which gave been grain fed natural feed without chemicals. Supplement with all natural organic
vitamins, herbs, minerals, antioxidants and phytonutrients. If you are getting the nutrients your body needs you are less apt to crave junk.

Water, Water and more Water
Drink half your weight in water i.e If you weigh 200 lbs drink 100 ounces water each day.

Consistency
Don't binge on weekends. Eat in the same manner every day and you'll be one and a half times more likely to maintain your weight.

Special Occasions ARE Special Occasions
Don't treat every restaurant meal as a special occasion when it's a "I don't want to cook" meal. In this way, you can indulge the moments that really count.

Put Yourself at the Top of Your TO DO List
Start doing now what you dream you will do "when you lose weight" and the rest will follow.
Pamper yourself with a full HomeSpa body treatment at home once a week. Soak in a hot Epsom salt bath with essential oils, apply a facial mask, trim nails, give your hair a hot oil treatment with all natural jojoba oil. Feeling good about yourself will enhance your attitude for the better.

Acknowledge It Will Be Easier the Longer You Do It

Research shows the more you adhere to a healthy lifestyle, the easier it becomes to continue it and keep the weight off.

Take Action! Create Tax Fairness for Supplements

URGE CONGRESS TO SUPPORT FAIR TAX TREATMENT FOR DIETARY SUPPLEMENTS
Millions use dietary supplements for their health. Here is your opportunity to tell Congress it's time to treat these beneficial products as valid health expenses! Take Action! Click Here. Contact your Representatives today and encourage them to co-sponsor the bi-partisan bill H.R. 2627, the Dietary Supplement Tax Fairness Act.

Click here to send a letter to your Members of Congress. It only takes one minute! This important legislation will allow you to include dietary supplements as valid health expenses on your taxes and through the pre-tax flexible medical spending accounts and health savings accounts you fund. This will save you hundreds of dollars each year when you purchase health promoting dietary supplements. Take action today!
http://www.healthactioncenter.com/action/index.asp?step=2&item=21299

Currently, prescription and over-the-counter drugs and costly conventional medical practices are the only choices you can currently cover with your tax-free health dollars. This is unfairly costing consumers millions of dollars. 25 billion dollars are already put aside each year in health and medical savings accounts. This money is saved by individuals and it is these individuals, not the government, who should determine the best health choices for them and their families. Just imagine the financial and overall health benefits if you and others are allowed to fund the choices, like dietary supplements, that bring and maintain your health. All we need to do to create this change is pass the Dietary Supplement Tax Fairness legislation introduced in Congress. This bill simply adds dietary supplements to the list of products and services considered valid health expenses in the IRS tax code. Over 158 million of us - over half of the entire U.S. population- make healthy "alternative" choices everyday; like taking vitamins, herbs or supplements. This groundbreaking legislation will help you afford many natural, less expensive and effective healthcare options you currently have to pay for out-of-pocket and without the tax benefits awarded to the conventional and pharmaceutical products.

PLEASE TAKE ACTION! Send a letter to your Representative and ask that they support H.R. 2627, the Dietary Supplement Tax Fairness Act. Send your message today. It only takes a minute!

Get a Good Night's Sleep

Go to Sleep!

Evidence linking sleep with behavior, mood and learning continues to grow. Now scientists are finding that reduced or disrupted sleep appears to increase the risk of obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

"The depth and breadth of sleep problems is not fully appreciated in this country," says US Surgeon General Richard H. Carmona. "Chronic sleep loss and untreated sleep disorders have a profound impact on Americans of all ages--they affect 70 million Americans and cost our nation $15 billion in health care expenses."

At the first NIH National Sleep Conference, March 29 and 30, participants looked at how insufficient sleep and sleep disorders impact the body's immune function, the development of psychiatric conditions including depression, and the progression of other chronic medical conditions such as breathing disorders and lung diseases, arthritis, and neurological disorders.

"We are all affected by sleep problems," adds Dr. Carl Hunt, Director of the National Center for Sleep Disorder Research, a Congressionally-mandated organization. "Even if you personally get sufficient sleep to feel refreshed each day, chances are you interact with someone who has a sleep problem. It could be your mother, whose sleep apnea increases her chances of developing heart disease; your carpool driver, who might be at increased risk for a car crash because of poor sleep; or your child, who has trouble in school because she doesn't get enough sleep at night."

Your Body Needs Rest to Rejuvenate
Too often, we sit down to relax or lie down to sleep, only to have our minds replay the day's events and anticipate tomorrow's. The body needs periods of rest and peace so that it can rejuvenate and build its defenses. At Nature's Sunshine we realize the lack of sleep will compromise your immune system. We have some formulas which are our favoites. These are two products I never go without.

This unique formula provides these generous amounts of vitamins in a base of healthful herbs and nutrients. Nutri-Calm boosts the immune system, helps the body relax and encourages restful sleep.
I personally use this multi vitamin on days when stress is making me a little crazy. Whenever I begin to feel myself getting uptight I take one tablet.
