INTRODUCING NATURE'S SWEET LIFE - A REAL WAY TO ELIMINATE SUGAR

Get Ready for Something Sweet!
By Nathan Jaynes

Ever stop to consider how much sugar you consume? If you look at the labels of the foods, drinks and snacks you eat every day, most things you eat contain some form of sugar. Over time , all that consumption adds up. The average adult consumes over 180 pounds of sugar each year! That's over 13,000 pounds of sugar during an average lifetime. Many of us will end up eating even more than that.

Our bodies pay the price for this level of consumption. Health experts agree that overuse of sugar is at least partly responsible for a myriad of diseases and conditions such as obesity, tooth decay, ADHD, hyperactivity and Type II diabetes. Some people have decided to use artificial sweeteners instead, but these man-made chemicals seem to cause more health problems than they prevent. And most artificial sweeteners taste... well... artificial.

Finding Hidden Sugars
Sugar is often disguised in everyday products. Look for there ingredients on food labels: sucrose, high-fructose corn syrup, simple syrup, glucose, dextrose, fructose, molasses, maltose, invret sugar, laevulose, and lactose.

Where's the hidden sugar?

Check out the amounts of sugar in these ordinary food items.
• 2 graham crackers - 1 tsp.
• 1 piece bubble gum - 2 tsp.
• 1 slice white bread - 3 tsp.
• 1/2 cup gelatin - 4 tsp.
• 2.1 oz. Milky Way bar - 9 tsp.
• 1 cup low-fat fruit yogurt - 11 tsp.
• 12 oz. orange soda - 12 tsp.

One tsp. equals 5 grams sugar.

Introducing Xylitol, a sweetener that is made from natural ingredients and tastes like sugar yet is low-calorie and does not cause cavities. Nature's Sunshine's new line of xylitol-based products- Nature's Sweet Life- will help you greatly reduce your sugar intake and may just make life a little sweeter.

What is Xylitol?

Xylitol is a natural compound that looks and tastes just like sugar. In fact, our bodies already digest the xylitol found in fruits, vegetables and other organic substances. Our bodies actually produce about 15 grams of xylitol each day as part of normal metabolism. Nature's Sweet Life xylitol is derived from non-genetically modified corn, making it completely natural. Xylitol has a safe track record; it has been used for over 40 years around the world and is approved in the U.S. for use in unlimited quantities in food. Nature's Sweet Life xylitol is gluten-free and does not contain any corn residue. Because corn is a renewable resource, Nature's Sweet Life xylitol is also considered an environmentally friendly product.

Not only does xylitol offer great taste, but it contains 40% fewer calories and 75% fewer carbohydrates than regular table sugar. It also has none of the side effects or bad aftertaste of artificial sweeteners.

Xylitol Science

The remarkable properties of xylitol stem from its unique molecular structure. Most sugar-like molecules have a six-carbon "hexose"unite. Xylitol is a five-carbon or "pentitol" sugar. Because of its distinctive arrangement of atoms, bacteria cannot utilize it for energy. This chemical structure inhibits the ability of our bodies to fully metabolize it as well. For this reason, xylitol has a very limited effect on blood sugar levels, making it the perfect sweetener for those concerned with blood sugar balance. Its low glycemic index of 7 makes it a terrific solution for carbcounters as well as those trying to lose weight. In comparison, table sugar has a glycemic index of 87.

Xylitol has other health benefits. Over 20 years of research and 1,500 scientific papers have confirmed that xylitol inhibits the ability of bacteria to adhere to the tissue in the mouth, nose, throat and respiratory tract. The most damaging acid to teeth is the lactic acid produced by the fermentation of sugar by bacteria in the mouth. Lactic acid reduces your mouth's pH level and deteriorates tooth enamel, creating cavities. Because bacteria cannot ferment pentose sugars, xylitol makes themouth inhospital for these harmful organisms and therefore beneficial for oral health. Xylitol has also been found to refresh and moistureize a dry mouth and throat, reduce bad breath and neutralize unpleasant tastes in the mouth. Xylitol has been given the FDA's safest rating and is endorsed by health and dental professionals around the world. You might say that xylitol is the natural sweetener the world has been waiting for-sweetener that is actually good for you!

What is Xylitol?
Xylitol is a naturally occurring sweetener that is found in raspberries, strawberries, plums, corn, endive, and mushrooms, and it is produced by the human body during its normal metabolism of glucose at the rate of about 10 to 15 grams daily. It is a five-carbon sugar alcohol, or polyol, that can be synthesized from a number of natural products such as corn cobs or the bark of birch trees. Even though commercial xylitol is synthesized, it is considered a natural substance because its chemical composition is identical to the naturally occurring substance. It is an odorless white crystalline powder with the same sweetness and bulk as sucrose (sugar), but having 40% less calories. It is metabolized in the body as a normal carbohydrate, but at a much slower rate than sucrose. Xylitol has a glycemic index of 7 as compared to that of sugar which is 64 and glucose which is 100. It has no aftertaste and also has very pleasant cooling sensation when it dissolves in the mouth.

MEDICAL INFORMATION
Because of Xylitol's unique 5-carbon structure, many types of bacteria such as Streptococcus mutans cannot metabolize it. This is the key reason that xylitol has been found to be effective in preventing or reducing cavities and sinus infections and inhibiting the growth of bacteria that cause ear infections in children.

A number of research studies conducted over more than 30 years have confirmed that using xylitol in the form of chewing gum from 3-5 times a day (about 4 to 12 grams a day) will reduce or prevent dental caries. In the United States, xylitol is approved as a food additive in unlimited quantities for foods with special dietary purposes.

Xylitol is useful as a sweetener in foods for persons who have diabetes because of its low glycemic index and its reduced caloric value (2.4 calories per gram vs 4.0 for sugar). This was the first medical use of xylitol. Insulin is required to get glucose into the cells, which is a problem for diabetics. Because xylitol is metabolized into glycogen that can be stored directly in the cells until it is converted into glucose for energy, no insulin is therefore required. Also because xylitol is slowly absorbed and is a natural insulin stabilizer, the rapid rise in blood glucose levels normally associated with the ingestion of sugar is greatly reduced.

Another benefit of xylitol is prevention of Candida Albicans because it inhibits yeast growth. It also increases the absorption of B vitamins and calcium, thus aiding in the prevention of the onset of osteoporosis. Studies in Finland have shown evidence that xylitol can actually reverse bone loss. Recent research by the University of Iowa has found promising evidence, that xylitol may be helpful in preventing lung infections in cystic fibrosis patients, and experimentation is continuing.

Then, place it in the oven, preheated to 350 degrees, and bake for
30–35 minutes.

PERSONAL CARE

Relaxing Bath Soak
Christa Lynne Strite
To tub of water, add:
1 cup Epsom salts
5–7 drops Lemon Bio essential oil
5–7 drops Pink Grapefruit Bio essential oil
5–7 drops Red Mandarin essential oil
Peppermint oil
adds a “cooling” effect.

Fresh and Healthful Bath/Shower Gel
Marti Denton
1 oz. water
3 oz. Nature’s Fresh
1 oz. Massage Oil
2 oz. Aloe Vera Gel
2 capfuls of Sunshine Concentrate
1/2 – 1 oz. Natria Nourishing Cleansing Lotion
(or Cleansing Gel)
10–20 drops Essential Oil(s) of choice (I like Geranium
with Frankincense or a small amount of Patchouli)
Although this is a not quite a “gel” consistency, it can be added
to the bath water or poured in the hands or on a cloth or
shower scrubbie.

Bobbi’s Body Butter
Marilyn Gillam
2–4 oz. vitamin E cream
8 oz. Vaseline (original formula)
15 oz. pink baby lotion
4–6 oz. Natria Sunscreen SPF 30
Place all ingredients in a mixing bowl and beat with electric
mixer until blended and “fluffy.” Place in small containers and
give to friends.

(I do not agree with the above recipe. Vaseline and pink baby lotion have chemical ingredients and are not good for the body. I would try substituting our Golden Salve for the vaseline and our Natria Body lotion for the baby lotion. ~ Karen Doolan)

Youthful Hands
Cesar Miramontes
5 capsules of Parsley
1/4 cup water
Combine and stir. Wet a cotton ball with this solution and
apply to hands. Let dry for 15 minutes, then rinse. Then apply
NSP sunscreen. Repeat daily and see the difference in a
few weeks.

Youthful Skin Mask
Cesar Miramontes
Mix the pulp of one orange with
a dab of Flax Seed Oil or NSP Massage
Oil
. Add 1 drop of Lemon Bio essential
oil
. Spread over your face and neck and
let it sit for 20 minutes. Rinse with
warm water.

HOUSEHOLD/CLEANING

Air Freshener
Christa Lynne Strite
To one bottle of Nature’s Fresh add:
7–10 drops Lemon Bio essential oil
7–10 drops Pink Grapefruit Bio essential oil
7–10 drops Peppermint essential oil

Dishwasher Rinse Agent
Renate Licata
To 1 cup of water add 1 teaspoon of Sunshine
Concentrate
and mix well. Pour into dispenser
where rinse agent usually goes. It does not
eliminate all of the spots on glassware, but this
way you don’t drink the residue that the rinse
agent leaves.

General Cleaner
JoAnn Snyder, C.H.
2 oz. white vinegar
2 oz. Nature’s Fresh
15 drops of lemon juice
Mix in cleaning bottle.

INGREDIENTS TO AVOID

Top 10 Troublesome Ingredients
By Sandy Tuin

1. Natural Flavors. Listed as natural flavors.
Found in:
Baked foods, frozen dinners, candy and more.

What's the big deal? Natural flavors include a number of naturally
occurring (non-chemical, non-artificial) substances approved for use in food
by the FDA. These flavors often come from allergy-inducing
ingredients such as nuts and wheat.
How to avoid it? If you are prone to food allergies call the food
manufacturer to learn the source of the natural flavor.

2. Artificial Colorings: Listed as yellow #6, blue #2, green #3, red #3 and
more.
Found in:
Candy, soda, gelatin, and more
What's the big deal? Some studies link artificial colorings to a range
of health problems including cancer, hyperactivity, thyroid and allergic
reactions. They have no nutritional value.
How to avoid it? Steer clear of artificially colored foods. Opt instead
for naturally colorful edibles like fresh fruits and dark leafy greens.

3. Chemical Cocktails. Unlisted
Found in:
Non-organic product.
What's the big deal? Conventional farmers spray their produce with
chemical fertilizers, insecticides and herbicides to keep insects and weeds
at bay. Residues of these toxic chemicals end up on your food, and some
studies have linked them to cancer and birth defects.
How to avoid it? Wash your produce thoroughly with a mixture of 1 tsp
mild
dishwashing detergent and 4 liters of water. Buy organic or shop at the
farmer's market.

4. Sodium Nitrite: Listed as Sodium nitrite
Found in:
Processed meats including bacon, ham, hot dogs, lunchmeats,
and corned beef.
What's the big deal? This preservative can mix with chemicals in the
stomach to form nitrosamines, a carcinogenic substance linked to cancers of
the pancreas, bladder and brain.
How to avoid it? Replace processed meats with fresh meats or purchase
nitrite-free lunchmeats. Meat found in canned soups and frozen dinners
commonly contains sodium nitrite, so check labels carefully.

5. High Fructose Corn Syrup: Listed as High fructose corn syrup, corn
sweetener, corn syrup, corn syrup solids
Found in:
Frozen foods, sweets, breads, spaghetti sauce, ketchup, many
canned vegetables, cereals, juices, sodas, breads and much more.
What's the big deal? High fructose corn syrup increases your risk for
diabetes. It also encourages overeating because its chemical structure
tricks your brain into thinking your body is hungry. And it can raise
triglyceride levels in the bloodstream, which increases risk of heart
disease. Also contributes to high cholesterol and insulin resistance. Has no
enzymes, vitamins or minerals and leaches micronutrients from your body.
How to avoid it? Limit your intake of added sugar to less than 10% of
your total daily calories. And/or buy alternative foods that do not
contain it!! A better choice of Sweetener is
Xylitol.
Check out NSP's Xylitol Sweetened treats:
Xylitol Gum Peppermint (100)
Xylitol Gum Spearmint (100)
Xylitol Gum Cinnamon (100)
Xylitol Mints Berry (240)
Xylitol Mints Lemon (240)
Xylitol Mints Peppermint (240)
Xylitol Mouthwash Peppermint (16 OZ)
Xylitol Bulk (1 LB BAG)

Nature's Sweet Life Memory Orange/Dark Chocolate Bars (28/1/2.7 oz Bars)
Nature's Sweet Life Plain Dark Chocolate Bars (28/1.27 oz Bars)

6. rBGH: Listed as rBGH
Found in:
dairy products, including milk and cheese.
What's the big deal? rBGH stands for recombinant (genetically modified)
bovine (cow) growth hormone. Dairy farmers inject cows with it to stimulate
milk production, and it ends up in the milk sold in grocery stores. Research
has tied it to prostate, solon and breast cancers.
How to avoid it? Look for milk that says ³no rBGH² on the label. Switch
to organic milk or raw milk.

7. Monosodium Glutamate (MSG): Listed as Yeast extract, gelatin, textured
and hydrolyzed proteins, calcium caseinate, sodium caseinate, and more.

Found in:
A wide range of foods including chips, canned soups, salad
dressings, fast food, and frozen dinners.
What's the big deal? MSG can affect the nervous system and make you feel
hungrier than you really are. It may also trigger migraines.
How to avoid it? Read food labels carefully. Even packages that say ³no
MSG or no MSG added can sneak the substance in disguised as any of the
ingredients above.

8. Sodium: Listed as salt, monosodium glutamate (MSG), baking soda.
Found in:
meat, eggs and dairy products. Also found in processed foods
like canned soups and frozen dinners.

What's the big deal? Your sodium count should not exceed 2400 milligrams
a day, but some studies how Americans average intake is 3300 mgs a day.
Excess sodium can raise blood pressure, which puts extra strain on your
heart.
How to avoid it? Use herbs and spices rather and salt to flavor your
food. Go easy on the salt shaker. When using salt use High Quality, mineral rich
Sea Salt.

9. Omega-6: Listed as Linoleic acid; sunflower, sesame, corn and soybean
oils.
Found in:
frozen and processed foods
What's the big deal? Ideally, you should eat three omega-6 fatty acids
for every omega-3 fatty acid you eat. But the ratio in most Western diets is
between 10:1 and 20:1. Excess intake of omega-6 can raise blood pressure and
increase your risk of heart disease.
How to avoid it? Eat fewer processed foods. Eat
Omega 3 rich foods like
walnuts, fish.

10. Trans Fat: Listed as partially hydrogenated oil.
Found in:
commercial baked goods like crackers and cookies; shortening
and margarine.
What's the big deal? Trans fats temporarily raise bad cholesterol and
lower good cholesterol.
How to avoid it? Even foods that claim 0 grams of trans fat on the label
can contain it because food manufacturers don't have to list amounts under
0.5 grams. But eating more than one serving of a food can easily double or
triple that half a gram. Read the label to be sure there are not partially
hydrogenated oils hiding in the ingredient list.
