Untold Truth Seminar Module 3 - The Diabetes Epidemic: Our Deadly Fascination with Junk Food

Diabetes statistics for the U.S.:
* Affects 18 million Americans
* Many are children or young adults.
* Six million are unaware they have diabetes.
* 800,000 new cases will be diagnosed this year.
* 33% of today's children will become diabetic.
* Seventh leading killer in the U.S.

What is Diabetes?
Gestational Diabetes

* Occurs in expectant mothers, usually goes away after baby's birth.
Type I
* Afflicts one million people in the U.S.
* Caused by the pancreas's inability to produce or properly use insulin.
* Insulin converts sugar into energy.
* Type I diabetics require insulin injections to stabilize blood sugar.
Type II
* 95% of diabetics have this variety.
* Previously known as "adult onset" diabetes
* Name changed because younger and younger people are now getting the disease
* Type II sufferers also struggle with insulin
* Pancreas may not produce enough
* Cells may have become "insulin resistant"
* The majority of type II diabetes is linked to diet and lifestyle.

What goes wrong with diabetes?
* Food is digested
* Glucose is released
* Pancreas releases insulin
* Cells receive energy
* WHAT GOES WRONG: faulty insulin receptors 0r insulin not working right; prevents the cell membrane from opening to receive the glucose it needs.

How Bad Is It?
* Type II Diabetes is the fastest growing disease in America today
* The average American today eats 530 calories more than he did in 1970.

Consumed per year:
* 60 lbs. cookies and cake
* 23 gallons of ice cream
* 7 lbs. potato chips (has to be more than that!!)
* 51 lbs. french fries
* 57 gallons soda pop

Older generation did they grow up on that kind of food? No. Even ice cream you had just once in a while, and it was made at home with stuff that resembled food. (Did you know that out-of-date ice cream, twinkies, etc. goes to pigs to fatten them up. One class member told us about what wonderful health her grandmother is in; 92 yrs. of age who has never eaten processed foods, and is bright and active and even matches her shoes and purse! We don't need every new diet fad that comes around --- even the "Eat right for your blood type"! We just need to eat moderately!!!

Signs you may have diabetes:
* increased/frequent urination
* dehydration
* excessive intake of water and/or food
* weight loss despite increased appetite
* nausea and/or vomiting
* abdominal pain or discomfort, particularly after eating
* weakness or excessive fatigue
* absence of menstruation in women
* blurred or poor vision
* increased susceptibility to infection and/or poor would healing
* Impotence in men

Risk factors:
* Family history of diabetes
* Over 40
* Pear shaped vs. apple shaped body
* Waist over 35" (women) or 40" (men)
* Sedentary lifestyle; high-fat, high-calorie diet
* High blood pressure
* Women history of gestational diabetes or PCOS
* African American, Hispanic American or Native American descendent
* History of kidney and/or gall bladder stones

UNTOLD TRUTH #1:
WE ARE OVERWHELMED AND UNDERMINED BY TOO MUCH SUGAR

What's so bad about too much sugar?
"An acidic diet (high sugar, meat, soda pop) causes calcium to go from the bones to the pancreas. This not only triggers osteoporosis, but also jams up the pancreas, which produces less insulin as a result."
(Journal of American Medicine)(Jammed in kidneys, gall bladder, bone spurs, breast calcifications, etc.)

How Much Sugar Do We Eat?
* A century ago, the average adult consumed 18 pounds of sugar per year.
* Today, annual average sugar consumption in the United States is a staggering 176 pounds per person.
* This is nearly 1000% more sugar than 100 years ago. Biggest weight loss secret of the century get rid of the sugar - out of your house! If it there you will eat it!

Is sugar the only problem?
* If you reduce sugar intake but continue to eat white bread, white minute rice and pasta in large amounts, those carbohydrate-dense foods will mimic straight sugar.
* Whole grains much better contain B vitamins & fiber.
* The wrong kinds of fats are a danger too. Remove trans fats, hydrogenated oils.
* Obesity is directly linked to diabetes development.

Normal blood glucose levels: (www.familydoctor.org)

* Before breakfast: 80-120
* 1-2 hours after breakfast: less than 180
* Before lunch: 80-120
* 1-2 hours after lunch: less than 180
* Before dinner: 80-120
* 1-2 hours after dinner: less than 180
* Bedtime: 100-140

* 3 a.m. - 70-110

Buy a glucometer and have people prick their own fingers while you hold the testing strip, so they can see what their blood glucose levels are.

Put them on Chromium GTF to start, nothing else, at the pre-diabetic stage

UNTOLD TRUTH #2:
Inflammation is the Root of Disease

Why is inflammation so bad?
* Inflammation damages cell membranes, making them "stiffer" and less receptive to insulin
* Chronic stress leads to inflammation
* Our toxic environment leads to inflammation

Stressed into diabetes:
"People who get only four hours of sleep per night have a 30% decrease in their insulin secretion. Restoring sleep can normalize their problem, but it takes 40% longer to recover to normal secretion levels. Chronic sleep deprivation may prevent recovery permanently, and may cause increased insulin resistance."
(J. Occupational Environmental Medicine 2001; 58:569)

UNTOLD TRUTH #3:
Nature Holds the Answer to Diabetes

Pharmaceutical companies have increased their advertising spending 612% between 1993 and 1998
Beautiful, flowing music and people --- then list all the side effects???

The downside (Effects) of Drugs:
* Shaking, rapid heartbeat, shortness of breath
* Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and other gastrointestinal effects
* Headaches, weakness, or confusion
* Weight gain or fluid retention
* Anemia
* Fatigue, soreness...and don't forget the spiraling costs of prescription drugs!!!

UNTOLD TRUTH #4:
Control Your Blood Sugar and You Control Almost Every Life-Threatening Disease

If I slow the aging process, will that help me avoid diabetes? ABSOLUTELY!!!
"Consider that the average 50-year-old woman in the U.S. Today can expect to live to be 81. If we were to conquer the two main causes of death, currently cancer and heart disease, it would only increase this woman's life span seven years, to age 88. That's because during this period, her over all health and vitality would still decline. She'd lose vigor, stamina, and her organs would tire and fail.
However, if we could slow the aging process, she would retain her energy many more years, be able to fight off diseases like cancer and Alzheimer's, all the while enjoying a longer, fuller life that could last in excess of 100 years."
(Research on the Aging: The End of the Beginning; Science, Feb. 2003)

Lower calories = Longer life
Remember the study on mice: calorie reduction extended their life span ---even of those who were already middle-aged! Additionally, within 4 weeks of their new, lower-calorie diet, these middle-aged mice saw a reversal of 70% of their age-related problems.
Get the same effects...by lowering your blood sugar. Keep your blood sugar balanced by eating lots of small meals throughout the day. When you get too hungry, you go into animal instinct: "Whatever I see first is going in my mouth."
(CinnaBon rents ventilation space in the mall to pipe their smells!)

Supplementation can help fight (even prevent!) diabetes!
* Sugar has overwhelmed our bodies and undermined its most important functions.
* Inflammation is the root of diabetes and other diseases - it must be controlled.
* Nature holds the answers to our diabetes questions.
* Controlling our blood sugar may not only prevent diabetes, it can also reduce disease and dramatically enhance our quality of life.
