MRGO HAS GOT TO GO
If you've been a GRN e-activist for a while, you probably helped us win our huge victory to get the MRGO (Mississippi River-Gulf Outlet) de-authorized by Congress.
If you're new to our list, or missed those e-mails, the Army Corps of Engineers constructed the Mississippi River-Gulf Outlet - commonly called "Mister Go" in the 1960s as a navigation shortcut between New Orleans and the Gulf of Mexico. MRGO damaged or destroyed tens of thousands of acres of wetlands that served as a natural hurricane barrier, and increased the destructive power of Hurricane Katrina.
The Corps recently submitted their MRGO closure plan to Congress, and unfortunately, immediate wetlands restoration still isn't part of the plan. That's a big problem because without rebuilding those critical coastal lines of defense, the MRGO levees and much of the New Orleans area flood protection system won't be as strong as it should be. We need the President and Congress to make sure the MRGO wetlands get rebuilt, and that the closure plan stays on schedule.
Write to the President. Visit www.MRGOmustGO.org to send a personalized email to the White House and our leaders in Washington to make sure this critical work gets done.
For our coast and our communities,
P.S. Please consider forwarding this e-mail to your friends and family and anyone who wants make sure New Orleans is protected.
Gulf Restoration Network is a diverse network of local, regional, and national groups and individuals dedicated to protecting and restoring the valuable resources of the Gulf of Mexico.
